Where to look for Fossils at Covehithe?

(Searching for fossils in the glacial pebble beds) - 2003

Most of the fossils are washed out from the Pebble Bed, these derived fossils mostly originally came from the chalk, re-deposited during the ice age. The foreshore is covered in pebbles and often you can simply stroll along the beach and pick fossils up. Also search the pebble beds themselves. You need to have a good eye for the right shapes.

(Shell Beds) - 2003

Mollusc Shells can also be found in the Baventian Shell Beds exposed during scouring tides at the base of the cliffs. Shells can also be found in the clay above and below this bed. The shells are very fragile so care must be taken when handling, during extreme scours a wide range of well preserved shells can be collected from the Red Bed, this is around 3 metres below the upper shell bed.

(Foreshore at Cove Hithe) - 2003

Also keep a look out for Bones, these can be washed up along the foreshore, some come from Easton Wood and others are washed from offshore. Pay particular attention after stormy seas or during scouring conditions.
