Geological Guide to Covehithe, Suffolk

(Covehithe Cliffs) - 2003

The beds at Covehithe have never been formally classified, the rare mollusc deposits are thought to be of the Baventian age. For that reason, only theory and personal research can put together a model structure for this location. The problem with this location is that the shell bed are only exposed during extreme scouring and this does not happen very often.

Baventian Clays
( Beds VI)
Fine silty clays, shells sporadically occur in small pockets. Macoma calcarea burrows and decomposed traces can be seen in particular layers. Evidence of disturbance and movement.
Upper Shell Bed
(Bed V)
25cm thick sandy deposit, some shells have been eaten by predators, the bed is dominated by one shell (Macoma calcarea) and the occasional predator. All shells preserved in their life-positions with many double valves.

Baventian Clays
( Beds IV)

Fine silty clay seams, Macoma calcarea burrows and decomposed traces can be seen in particular layers. Evidence of disturbance and movement. Bed Thickness estimated at 2.5 to 3 metres.
Lower Shell Bed
(Bed III)
15cm thick sandy shell bed deposit with a range of mollusc shells.
Red Bed
(Bed II)
Hard well preserved shell bed with a deep red colour and a wide range of different textures with occasional blue/brown coloured patterns. This bed was first documented during 1958 and 1960 and again in January 2004 by UK Fossils. Very little research has been conducted, but samples have been taken for analysis. Thickness is around 10cm.
Baventian Clay
(Bed I)
Blue Clays, the upper most part contains occasional shells but mostly unfossilferious. This bed has been recorded as deep as 1m during the 2004 January Scour, but the actual thickness is unknown. This clay is also the same clay found above the Norwich Crag at Easton Bavents and Easton Wood. Below this level, the Antian Stage begins.
